Gowanus Gang and Ennis Playground

The Gowanus Gang characters were created as a major part of Friends of Ennis Playground to advocate for Ennis Playground located on 12th street between 2nd and 3rd Avenues in Gowanus. Just three years ago this playground wasn’t even listed on Google maps and it was extremely overlooked. With joined efforts of the Gowanus Alliance together with the Gang and the Gowanus Canal Conservancy we have done major improvements such as planting of 9 trees and installment of a garden. Since then we’ve had several community events with free food donated by awesome businesses in Gowanus including Whole Foods, Peeled Snacks, Number one Deli, and others. We also hosted fun activities for our volunteers and children such as face painting, volleyball games, and chalk drawing!
In 2014 Ennis Playground was selected for Participatory Budget Ballot by Councilmember Brad Lander. We are hoping that with the help of the Gowanus community Ennis Playground would receive a facelift of its basketball court and more. Our goal is to make Ennis Playground safe and enjoyable place to play.

The Gang’s mission goes way beyond Ennis Playground! We are here to spread the news and ideas about cleaner community environment, progress of the canal clean up, and sustainability. We believe that by using fun and informative ways to communicate these ideas, younger members of our community would become engaged in advocacy for safer, greener, and funner Gowanus!
